Herbal Cleanse · Short-Course Botanical Formula

A reset has a start date and a stop date.

Herbal Cleanse is not a daily supplement. It is an 850 mg blend of seven traditional digestive botanicals built for a short, deliberate reset — then you stop, and you rebuild. We would rather tell you that on the front of the page than let you find it out on day forty.

Why this one exists

Most cleanse products are one idea. This one is two.

Walk the cleanse aisle and you will find the same product over and over: a stimulant herb, sometimes two, in a capsule. It moves things. It also tends to leave the gut lining irritated and the user convinced that discomfort is proof the product is working.

That is a poor trade. The gut wall you are trying to move waste past is the same tissue you need intact afterward. A cleanse that empties the pipe and roughs up the wall on the way out has done half a job.

Herbal Cleanse pairs the three traditional stimulant botanicals — cascara sagrada, rhubarb root and aloe leaf — with four demulcent and carminative herbs that coat, cushion and calm: flaxseed, marshmallow root, slippery elm and peppermint leaf. One half of the blend encourages movement. The other half looks after the tissue that movement passes through.

That is the whole design idea, and it is the reason this formula reads differently from a single-herb stimulant capsule.

The difference

Industry standard versus the IOH standard.

The typical cleanse capsule

Sold as a lifestyle

  • Marketed for open-ended daily use with no stated stop point
  • Stimulant botanicals only, with nothing to cushion the tissue
  • Warnings buried, medication interactions unmentioned
  • Plant parts and Latin names left off the panel
  • Discomfort reframed as evidence the product is working
Herbal Cleanse

Sold as a short course

  • Written and positioned as a defined reset, not a daily habit
  • Four demulcent and carminative herbs alongside the three stimulant botanicals
  • Interactions and cautions stated on this page, in plain language
  • Latin binomial and plant part named for every botanical
  • Cramping is a signal to reduce the dose, not a badge

What it supports

Four things this blend is built to do.

01

Regularity

Cascara sagrada, rhubarb root and aloe leaf are the traditional botanicals used to support regular, complete bowel elimination during a short course.

02

A cushioned lining

Marshmallow root and slippery elm are demulcents. Their mucilage supports the comfort of the mucosal surface while the rest of the blend does its work.

03

Bulk and glide

Flaxseed brings both soluble fiber and mucilage, supporting stool form and easy passage rather than pure stimulation.

04

Everyday comfort

Peppermint leaf is the classic carminative, used to support comfort after meals and to help ease the sensation of gas and fullness.

The signature idea

Move and soothe: the two halves of this blend.

Seven botanicals, two jobs. Read the formula this way and every choice in it makes sense.

Lane 01 — Move

The anthraquinone herbs

Cascara SagradaRhamnus purshiana · bark
RhubarbRheum palmatum · root
Aloe VeraAloe barbadensis · leaf
These three share a chemistry family called anthraquinones. They are the reason this is a short course rather than a daily supplement, and the reason the cautions below are worth reading in full.
Lane 02 — Soothe

The mucilage and carminative herbs

FlaxLinum usitatissimum · seed
MarshmallowAlthaea officinalis · root
Slippery ElmUlmus pumila · bark
PeppermintMentha piperita · leaf
Four of the seven botanicals in this blend are here for the tissue, not the transit. That ratio is deliberate, and it is what separates this from a single-herb stimulant capsule.

Why both lanes belong in the same capsule. Mucilage is water-loving. Marshmallow root, slippery elm and flax hydrate in the gut and form a slick, gel-like layer along the mucosal surface. When that layer is present at the same time transit picks up, the passage is a smoother one. Run the stimulant herbs alone and you get movement without the cushion. That is the version most of the category sells.

Straight talk

This label is a proprietary blend. The panel discloses 850 mg total across seven botanicals and does not break out what each one contributes. We do not like that, and we will say so plainly rather than hope you do not notice: IOH's standard is full dose disclosure, and this label does not currently meet it. When the individual amounts are printed, this page will carry them.

What we can tell you honestly today is what is in it, what part of the plant it came from, what each botanical is traditionally used for, and exactly who should not take it. That is the second half of this page, and none of it is hidden behind a click.

Inside the formula

Seven botanicals, and what each one is doing here.

Individual amounts are not disclosed on the current label. Every botanical below is listed on the panel as part of the 850 mg GI Cleansing Proprietary Blend.

Cascara Sagrada

Rhamnus purshiana · barkMove

A Pacific Northwest bark with a long history of traditional use for supporting bowel elimination. Its hydroxyanthracene compounds act at the wall of the large intestine, supporting the peristaltic contractions that move contents along and influencing how much water stays in the stool.

Cascara is potent, and potency is exactly why this is a short course. It is not intended for continuous long-term use.

Supports regular, complete bowel elimination

Rhubarb Root

Rheum palmatum · rootMove

Da huang in traditional Chinese herbal practice, where it has been used for centuries as a digestive and eliminative herb. It shares the anthraquinone chemistry of cascara and is traditionally paired with it, and it also carries tannins — astringent compounds that give the herb a second, quieter character alongside its eliminative one.

Rhubarb root is naturally high in oxalate. That matters if you have a history of calcium oxalate kidney stones; see the safety section below.

Supports normal bowel transit and the body's own waste elimination

Aloe Vera

Aloe leafMove

Aloe is two materials in one plant. The clear inner gel is the soothing, polysaccharide-rich fraction most people picture. The bitter yellow latex just under the rind carries aloin, an anthraquinone, and is the eliminative fraction. Which one a supplement contains depends entirely on how the leaf was processed.

In a blend positioned around cleansing, aloe is contributing to the movement side of the formula. We have asked our manufacturer for the specific aloe fraction and the aloin specification for this material, and this page will state it once that documentation is in hand.

Supports the mucosal surface of the digestive tract and normal elimination

Flaxseed

Linum usitatissimum · seedSoothe

The most nutritionally complete member of this blend. Flax delivers insoluble fiber for stool form and a soluble mucilage that hydrates into a gel. Together they support bulk and easy passage rather than stimulation alone, and the fermentable fraction is food for resident gut bacteria.

Flax mucilage is also the reason to keep water intake up while you are on this formula. Fiber without fluid is a step backward.

Supports stool form, comfortable passage and a healthy microbial environment

Marshmallow Root

Althaea officinalis · rootSoothe

The reference demulcent of Western herbalism. Marshmallow root is roughly a quarter mucilage polysaccharide by weight in good material; on contact with water it forms a viscous film that sits along mucosal surfaces. That physical film is the mechanism — there is nothing systemic about it.

In this blend, marshmallow is the counterweight to the anthraquinone herbs, and it is why the formula reads as a cushioned reset rather than a stimulant alone.

Supports the comfort of the mucosal lining of the digestive tract

Slippery Elm

Ulmus pumila · barkSoothe

Elm inner bark is the North American parallel to marshmallow root, used the same way and for the same reason: a mucilage that hydrates into a protective gel. Stacked with marshmallow and flax, it gives the blend three separate sources of mucilage rather than relying on one.

Note the Latin name on the panel. The species declared is Ulmus pumila, Siberian elm, which is a distinct species from Ulmus rubra, the red or slippery elm of classical Western herbalism. We name it rather than blur it.

Supports the comfort and integrity of the intestinal lining

Peppermint Leaf

Mentha piperita · leafSoothe

The classic carminative. Menthol and the other volatile constituents in peppermint leaf influence smooth muscle tone in the gut wall, which is the basis for peppermint's traditional use in supporting comfort after meals and easing the sensation of gas and fullness. Peppermint is also traditionally used to support normal bile flow.

One caution worth knowing up front: peppermint can relax the sphincter at the top of the stomach. If reflux is something you deal with, that is a reason to talk to your physician before starting.

Supports post-meal digestive comfort and normal digestive muscle tone

The short version

Everything you need in four boxes.

What it is

An 850 mg blend of seven traditional digestive botanicals in a vegetarian capsule. Three are the classic eliminative herbs. Four are demulcent and carminative herbs chosen to look after the tissue. Sixty capsules, thirty servings.

What it does

Supports regular, complete bowel elimination during a short course, alongside mucilage-forming botanicals that support the comfort of the intestinal lining and normal post-meal digestive comfort.

Who it's for

Adults who want a defined, short botanical reset — often before starting a new nutrition plan or supplement protocol. Not for anyone who is pregnant or nursing, under eighteen, or dealing with an ongoing bowel condition without physician guidance.

How to take it
  • Start with one capsule in the evening with a full glass of water
  • Increase to two capsules only if one is not enough for you
  • Keep fluid intake high throughout
  • Short course only. Do not use for more than one week unless your physician directs otherwise
  • Separate from oral medications by at least two hours

The printed label does not currently carry a Suggested Use line. The guidance above reflects conservative practice for a botanical formula of this type and starts you at half a serving on purpose. Confirm it with your own physician before you begin.

Honest expectations

What a reset actually looks like.

We will not put a countdown on this page. Digestion is personal, and a formula that promises a specific result on a specific day is telling you something it cannot know.

STEP 01

Start low, at night

One capsule in the evening, with water. Anthraquinone botanicals traditionally work on an overnight timeframe, which is why evening is the conventional time to take them. Some people find one capsule is all they need. Find that out before you go to two.

STEP 02

Adjust by response, not by schedule

Cramping, urgency or loose stool means the dose is too high for you, not that the product is working. Step back down. The mucilage herbs are working whether or not you feel anything, and comfort is the target here.

STEP 03

Stop, then rebuild

This is where most cleanse products go quiet. A short course is the whole intent. When it is done, the work shifts to fiber, fluid, food and the microbiome — and that is a different set of products, not another bottle of this one.

Quality and manufacturing

What is documented for this product.

We list what we can document for this specific formula. Certifications and batch reports held for other products in the IOH line do not transfer here, and we will not imply that they do.

Facility

Manufactured in the United States in a facility that is registered with the FDA and operates under Good Manufacturing Practices. Registration is not FDA approval, and we do not describe it that way.

In-process testing

Our manufacturer performs testing at multiple stages of production. A lot-specific certificate of analysis for this product is not currently posted, so we make no batch-verified claim for it.

Formulation

Botanical identity and plant part are declared for all seven ingredients. Individual amounts within the blend are not disclosed on the current label, and we have said so on this page.

Not a product claim. A photograph.

“In thirty-three years of practice I have never once seen a patient fix their gut with a cleanse. What I have seen is a short reset make the next ninety days of real work land better. That is what this bottle is for, and I would rather sell you one of them than twelve.”

Stacks

What comes after the reset.

Herbal Cleanse is the short opening move. These are the formulas built for the longer work that follows, and each one is here for a reason we can explain.

Rebuild the barrier

Gut RestoreX

A cleanse addresses transit. It does nothing for barrier integrity or the microbial environment, and those are the two things that determine how the gut behaves next month. Run Gut RestoreX after the course rather than during it.

View Gut RestoreX →
Repopulate

Probiotic 40

Increased transit moves resident bacteria along with everything else. Following a short course with a shelf-stable multi-strain probiotic is the logical next step, started once the cleanse is finished.

View Probiotic 40 →
Feed the lining

AceX Glutamine

Glutamine is the preferred fuel of the enterocytes that line the small intestine. It is a rebuild-phase nutrient, not a cleanse-phase one, which is exactly why it belongs on the other side of this course.

View AceX Glutamine →

One pairing we will not recommend: do not run Herbal Cleanse alongside another eliminative or cleansing botanical formula. Stacking two products from the same category is how a gentle reset stops being gentle.

I use this one the way I would prescribe it — a short course, at a low dose, when I want a clean starting line before I change something bigger. Then I put it away.

Stay Strong,

Dr. Andreas

Questions, answered

Everything worth asking before you start.

Medications and this formula — what do I need to know?

This is the most important question on the page, and there are two separate mechanisms to understand.

First, absorption. Flaxseed, marshmallow root and slippery elm all form mucilage, and mucilage can slow or reduce the absorption of oral medications taken at the same time. Increased intestinal transit can do the same thing. Separate Herbal Cleanse from any oral medication or oral contraceptive by at least two hours, and talk to your physician or pharmacist about anything with a narrow therapeutic window.

Second, electrolytes. Extended use of anthraquinone botanicals can affect potassium status. That matters specifically if you take cardiac glycosides such as digoxin, thiazide or loop diuretics, corticosteroids, or antiarrhythmic medication, because low potassium changes how those drugs behave. Do not use this product alongside those medications without physician supervision.

Also review with your physician if you take anticoagulant or antiplatelet medication, or medication for blood sugar. Aloe and flax have both been reported to influence those systems.

Who should not take this?

Do not use this product if you are pregnant or nursing. Do not give it to anyone under eighteen.

Do not use it if you have abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea, or if you have a known or suspected intestinal obstruction. Do not use it if you have an inflammatory bowel condition, a history of bowel surgery, or any undiagnosed change in bowel habit — those all need a physician, not a supplement.

Because rhubarb root is high in oxalate, talk to your physician first if you have a history of calcium oxalate kidney stones or reduced kidney function. Because peppermint can relax the sphincter at the top of the stomach, talk to your physician first if you deal with reflux or a hiatal hernia.

Stop use and contact your physician if you experience rectal bleeding, persistent cramping, or fail to have a bowel movement after using the product.

How long can I take it?

Treat this as a short course. Conventional guidance for botanicals in this class is not to exceed one week of continuous use without physician supervision, and we are not going to write something looser than that just because it would sell more bottles.

Prolonged use of anthraquinone-containing botanicals is associated with dependence, where normal bowel function becomes harder to maintain without the stimulus, and with loss of electrolytes. Neither is a fair trade for convenience. If you find you need something daily to stay regular, that is a conversation with your physician about the underlying cause.

Is this actually gentle? The label calls it a cleanse.

Three of the seven botanicals in this blend — cascara sagrada, rhubarb root and aloe leaf — belong to the anthraquinone family, which is the same chemistry as the traditional stimulant herbs. Describing this formula as containing nothing stimulating would not be accurate, and we are not going to say it.

What is fair to say is that the blend is buffered. Four of the seven botanicals are demulcent or carminative herbs included specifically to support comfort, and the dose is one you control: start at one capsule, not two. Gentleness here comes from formulation and from how you take it, not from the absence of active botanicals.

Why is this a proprietary blend when IOH says it does not use them?

Fair question, and the honest answer is that this label predates our current standard. The panel discloses 850 mg across seven named botanicals and does not break out individual amounts.

We are not going to bury that. Full dose disclosure is the standard we hold the line on across the catalog, and when the individual amounts are printed on this label, they will appear on this page the same day. Until then you have the complete ingredient list, the plant parts, the Latin names and every caution that applies.

When should I take it, and with what?

Evening, with a full glass of water. Botanicals in this class have traditionally been taken at night because the timeframe over which they work tends to land the following morning.

Water is not optional here. Three of the ingredients are mucilage sources that need fluid to do anything useful, and fiber taken without adequate water works against you. Keep intake up for the duration of the course.

Can I take it with the rest of my IOH stack?

Generally yes, with one timing note and one exclusion.

The timing note: the mucilage in this formula can slow absorption of anything taken with it, including your other supplements. Take Herbal Cleanse in the evening and keep your multivitamin, minerals and fat-soluble nutrients earlier in the day.

The exclusion: do not run this alongside another eliminative or cleansing botanical product. One at a time.

Is it vegetarian, and what are the other ingredients?

Yes. The capsule is cellulose-based, not gelatin. Beyond the botanical blend, the capsule contains rice powder, silica, magnesium stearate and calcium silicate — standard flow and fill agents, present in small amounts.

There are no added colors, flavors or sweeteners in this product.

The close

Clear the line. Then do the real work.

Nobody rebuilds a gut in a week, and any company that tells you otherwise is selling you the wrong bottle. What a short, well-formulated botanical course can do is give you a clean starting point — a defined reset before the food changes, the fiber, the microbiome work and the ninety days that actually move the needle.

Seven botanicals. Three to move, four to soothe. A stop date printed right on the page. That is the entire pitch, and we would rather make it honestly than dress it up as something it is not.

It's only halftime. Clear the line and get back out there.

This formula contains no trademarked or branded ingredients. All botanicals are declared by common name, Latin binomial and plant part on the Supplement Facts panel.

Manufactured in the United States in an FDA-registered facility operating under Good Manufacturing Practices. FDA registers manufacturing facilities; it does not approve them or the products made in them.

Keep out of reach of children. Not for use by anyone who is pregnant or nursing, or by anyone under eighteen. Consult your physician before use, particularly if you take prescription medication, have a bowel condition, or have a history of kidney stones.
